utwordSystem v3.25.7
Decisions

The podium says 1st, 2nd and 3rd in tiles

Players asked for gold, silver and bronze. The top three are told apart by the board's own tile states instead, so the podium adds no new hue.

Context

3.20 added the monthly podium: on the 1st, last month's final standings open as a sheet for everyone, with the top three as columns. The three places had to read apart at a glance, and players asked for gold, silver and bronze.

The palette has two semantic hues (green for earned, rose for refused) and one system hue (blue, for focus), and "no fourth hue" is a standing rule.

Decision

The columns are the three states a tile already has on the board. Gold, silver and bronze are said in tiles, not in a new hue.

PlaceColumnTokens
1stsolid--tile fill, --tile-ink numeral
2ndtraced--select fill, 2px --select-stroke, --select-ink numeral
3rdlit--lit fill, 1.5px --select-stroke, --lit-ink numeral

Columns are 72px wide with 12px corners, 150, 104 and 66px tall, set 2, 1, 3 from left to right, numerals in --font-display at 24px. They grow 3rd, then 2nd, then 1st, and the crown drops onto the 1st column.

Evidence

Each numeral reads on its column in both modes, computed from the tokens:

Consequences

  • Light mode needs nothing of its own. Every column resolves to the active tokens, so the podium swaps with the rest of the system.
  • One token was added, for the crown rather than the columns: --raise-solid, the opaque twin of --raise, so the crown's halo can cover what's behind it.
  • The confetti uses the same vocabulary: tiles, traced tiles, letter tiles spelling the winner's name, and ribbons cut from the trace line.
  • "Gold, silver or bronze" is listed in Deliberately omitted. Asking for it again needs a record that answers this one.
  • See Celebration for the podium's timing and the crown.
