Update reel
A short story on the app's real screens that plays once after a feature release. It starts on Home, taps into what's new, uses it, and comes back. Only the chapters change.
When it happens
- Once per
REEL_VERSION, stored on the phone asow_reel, on Home, for players who have played before. Never mid-round. - A new player is marked as having seen it, so a first visit never opens on a reel. A player who switches in with a recovery code is marked too.
- It opens 700ms after Home is clear of sheets, and it takes the visit's one ask: on the 1st the podium goes first, and Keep your spot waits until the reel has been seen (Recovery and save nudges).
When a release gets a reel
| Release | Reel |
|---|---|
| A feature release with something new players will see or touch | can carry a reel; REEL_VERSION moves to that release, so it plays once |
| A feature release without a reel | REEL_VERSION stays, so nobody gets a replay. 3.23 shipped this way; it stays at 3.22.2 |
| A patch | never. Patches keep the same REEL_VERSION, so a fix never replays the reel |
| The one exception | 3.22.1 and 3.22.2 moved it, because the 3.22.0 reel opened blank on most phones and had already been marked as seen |
The reel has been keyed to its own REEL_VERSION, not APP_VERSION, since 3.21.1. Features are minor bumps and fixes are patch bumps, so the version alone says whether a reel is possible.
What gets a chapter
From the 3.21 template (spec §14). The 3.22 format changed the open and the close, and kept this test.
| Kind of change | In the reel? | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| A new thing players will see or touch | a chapter | what they already know, then the new thing, how it works, where it lives |
| A change to something they know | a chapter | before, after, where |
| More than three visible changes | the best three | the rest go in one line: "Plus smaller fixes" |
| Fixes, speed, anything behind the scenes | no | the changelog only |
Composition
The current format dates from 3.22 (decisions/update-reel-format.md). The 3.21 reel opened on a board spelling NEW and closed on a recap list; from 3.22 the reel is a story on real screens and closes on the new Home.
| Part | Spec |
|---|---|
| Container | a 350×640 card, scaled down to fit shorter or narrower screens (never up), on a solid ground so nothing of Home shows through |
| Badge | a pill at the top for the whole reel: "Update {version} · {N} new · {length}", for example "Update 3.22 · 2 new · 24s". There's no X |
| Stage | the real screens at their true proportions: Home, the new screen, the new Home. The timer and points pills, the board, the word pill and the hint button are the game's own pieces |
| Captions | a headline of 5 words or fewer, each word rising 60ms after the last out of a 4px blur, and one line under it of 14 words or fewer. The first headline uses the player's name ("Ru, Home's refreshed"; "Hey," without one) |
| Rail | along the bottom, one label per chapter ("1 · Home refresh", "2 · Daily trivia"), each filling as it plays |
| Close | the new Home with a small NEW tag on each new part, a headline and one line. Close is the primary and goes Home; Watch again is a link under it. No recap list, no replayed trace, no second confetti. It never dismisses itself |
| Controls | tap the right of the card for the next beat and the left third to go back; hold to pause. Escape closes it on a keyboard |
| Screen readers | the dialog is labelled "What's new in Outword 3.22", with a short description of the whole update |
The reel is authored on the design canvas and exported as data: one HTML template of the pieces, a list of style changes over time, beat marks and keyframes. The app's player mounts the template itself and applies each change on a timer, so the app plays exactly what was approved. Name tokens are filled in when it plays. Because the template carries its own inline styles rather than the game's classes, it has no live specimen here.
Flow
The shape, about 25 seconds: the badge, then 1 to 3 chapters, one per new thing, then the close.
How a chapter is told:
- Start where they are. Open on the screen they already know, Home, then tap into the new thing. The finger lands on the exact card.
- Show it working. Use the real game pieces, and show every number that matters: the clock, the points.
- Give the key moments room. Each rule gets its own beat, with a hold so it can sink in. Move fast through everything between them, with no dead air between a tap and what it causes.
- Land the payoff. The earned moment gets the celebration, then the story comes back to Home to show where the new thing lives.
The 3.22 reel
The reel that ships today. Its template marks beats at 0, 4.2, 8.6, 11.4, 17.4 and 20.3s, and the close arrives at 21.9s.
| Chapter | What happens | Headline | Line |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Home refresh | Home appears and scrolls to Compete | "Ru, Home's refreshed" | "Cleaner buttons. Your daily games, side by side." |
| 2 · Daily trivia | the tap lands on the Trivia card and the trivia screen opens | "New: daily trivia" | "One question. Two minutes." |
| the clock counts to 1:00 and the hint button fills | "At 1:00, a hint unlocks" | "Stuck? Tap it for the first two letters." | |
| a cut to 0:20; six decoy tiles fade and the points drop | "At 0:20, tiles start to fade" | "Still stuck? The decoys clear out." | |
| the answer is traced, the pill turns green, and confetti fires off the pill | "First to solve unlocks it" | "And the confetti's all yours." | |
| back on Home, the Trivia card is green with "You" on the lock | "Home shows who won it" | "Your name on the lock. A race, every day." | |
| Close | the new Home, with NEW tags on the Daily board and Trivia cards | "Your new Home is ready" | "Today's question is waiting." |
Before it ships
From the 3.21 checklist, where the 3.22 format didn't replace it: every field filled with real copy; the badge counts the changes and the rail names them; every piece real and at true proportions; one move per beat and a hold after each caption; the player's own name; confetti only where earned and gone before the close; reduced motion opens on the close and still makes sense; it plays once per feature release, on Home, for returning players, never mid-round.
States
| State | What the player sees |
|---|---|
| Playing | captions rising, the rail filling chapter by chapter |
| Held | everything stops while the finger is down (after 220ms), and carries on when it lifts |
| Skipping | a tap on the right jumps to the next beat; on the left, back to the start of the beat, or to the previous one within its first 1.2s |
| Close | the new Home with its NEW tags, Close and Watch again; it waits |
| Watch again | the whole story from the start |
| Short or narrow screen | the card scales down to fit |
| Reduced motion | opens straight on the close, with every animation cut to 1ms |
Why it's built this way
Known issues and gaps
- The reel that ships describes 3.22 trivia. Its trivia chapter shows one question a day, a hint at 1:00, decoys fading at 0:20, and "First to solve unlocks it", and its Home shows "2 min · 1 question". 3.23 replaced all of these.
REEL_VERSIONis still 3.22.2, so a returning player whose storedow_reelis older than that still sees it. - The NEW tags are green. The format puts a small green NEW tag on each new part (filled with
#7BE0A3, the dark--earned), while the colour rules keep green for something earned and rule it out for badges. See D-002. - It's always dark. The template and the player's CSS write the dark values in directly (
#202845,#F2F0EA,#7BE0A3), so the reel plays dark in light mode too. - The spec points to a section that doesn't exist. §14 says it's superseded by "15.4"; there is no 15.4. The 3.22 format lives in §19 and
decisions/update-reel-format.md. The reduced-motion table still says the reel "opens on the recap close", though 3.22 has no recap. - The 3.21 reel's styles are still shipped. 41 of its
wn-*classes style nothing the app renders. See System health. - A reel can't be rebuilt from this repo. The exporter the format names (
tools/export_reel.py) and the canvas file aren't in it.
