Trivia is a run, not one question a day
The 3.22 daily trivia was one question scored on a points ladder. 3.23 made it a 2-minute run, as many as you can, with one free hint and free skips, ranked by most solved.
Context
Daily trivia shipped in 3.22 as one question a day, the same for everyone, with the answer hidden on a 5×5 board. Two minutes, unlimited tries, and a score that started at 100 and came down.
A player who didn't know the answer had two ways forward, both waiting on the clock and both costing points: the hint, which unlocked at 1:00 (−20), and six decoys fading at 0:20 (−10). The 3.22 update reel taught it in that order: "Stuck? Tap it for the first two letters.", then "Still stuck? The decoys clear out."
Options
| Version | Approach | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 3.22 | One question a day, its level picked by weekday. Score from 100: −5 per two misses, −20 for the hint (unlocks at 1:00), −10 when six decoys fade at 0:20; never below 10 if solved, 0 if time runs out. Ranked by points, then time | Replaced in 3.23, the same day |
| 3.23 | A 2-minute run, as many questions as you can. One hint for the whole run, free skips, no fade. Ranked by most solved, then fewer skips, then who finished first | Chosen |
Decision
Solve a question and the next one is up straight away. Questions climb from Easy to Intermediate to Difficult as the run goes. The hint lights the first two letters of the question you're on, once per run. Skip is free: "the clock is the only cost". The fade is gone: "the run is the challenge". The player with the most solved today gets "You solved the most" (worded "You unlocked the most" until 3.23.2) and the podium confetti, after the round.
Results live in a new node (tq), so 3.22 entries from the same day never mixed with 3.23 runs, and anyone who had played the 3.22 question that day got a fresh run. The same run became Trivia mode in Play, replacing Survival.
Evidence
Consequences
- A day uses many questions, not one. The daily rotation assumes a strong run uses 2 Easy, 6 Intermediate and 8 Difficult questions. The bank grew from 96 to 497 by 3.23.3, and 3.23.3 added a rotation to keep repeats rare. See Trivia questions.
- Scoring followed. Hints cost nothing, skips only break ties, and trivia banks per answer (5 since 3.23.2). See D-009.
- A fair race needed the same questions for everyone. 3.23.0 dealt each player their own shuffle; 3.23.2 seeded the day's set by the date, so everyone meets the same questions on the same boards.
- The question changes after every solve or skip, so its length started moving the board between questions. D-004, the question card fixed that.
- "Unlocked" left the trivia copy in 3.23.2: the leader reads "most today", and the summary "You solved the most".
