The Longest word goal

Longest word has one goal from start to finish, the board's headline word, and any word at least that long wins.

D-011 · 3.23.7 · 2026-10-12

Context

A player reported it: the Home card said "9 letters", the line above the board said "find the longest word · 9 on this board", and the round ended the moment she found a 9-letter word. Then the board said "10 letters" with a lock, and she got no bonus.

Two word lists were in play. The board generator picks a headline word from the everyday list (about 38,000 words), and its own rule is that a headline "must be findable (hard is fine, unfindable isn't)". The card, the line above the board and the end of the round used that word. The win, the +10 and the lock used the longest word in the full dictionary players type against (about 178,000 words).

Options

Decision

The headline word is the goal everywhere: the card, the line above the board, the round ending on the find, the win, the +10 and the lock. A word at least that long reaches the goal. The leaderboard judges every entry by this rule when it opens, so today's board reads right at once. Points already banked stay as scored.

Evidence

Measured over 45 daily Longest word boards (2026-10-01 to 2026-11-14), generated exactly as the game does:

Days
The full list's longest word is longer than the headline21 of 45
...and that longer word is outside the everyday list21 of 21

Examples of the longer words: OROGENESIS (10, headline 9), RECARPETED (10, headline 8), ACIDIMETRIES (12, headline 8). On those days the +10 and the unlock were out of reach for almost everyone.

Consequences

  • The card's number is the number that wins, on every day.
  • A player who finds a longer rare word still reaches the goal, and ranks above everyone who stopped at the headline's length.
  • The "longest possible" pill on the leaderboard now shows the goal's length, and, once someone reaches it, the headline word itself rather than a rare word.
  • The Daily board's "longest on board" still uses the full dictionary. It reveals a word; it doesn't decide a win.
