Telling the games apart on the bars
Trivia's part of each day's bar on the month board is an outline of --fg instead of a third shade, so the three games are told apart by fill as well as shade, and its numbers are readable.
Context
Since 3.24.0 your row on the month board splits each day's bar by game in three inks of --fg: Daily --fg, Longest --fg-soft, Trivia --fg-faint (D-012). Ru: "users think the color shades for the point differentiator are hard to read."
Measured as a three-category palette in dark mode, the inks fail: --fg and --fg-soft sit outside the lightness band, and all three are under the chroma floor, so they read as greys and only lightness separates them. Trivia's numbers, --fg on --fg-faint, were 4.0:1 in dark mode, a known gap on the scoring page.
Options
Each was mocked on the real month board, dark and light. The rule that parts of one number share one colour holds in all of them: no fourth hue.
| Option | Daily · Longest · Trivia | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Three shades (as shipped) | --fg · --fg-soft · --fg-faint | Hard to tell apart; Trivia's numbers 4.0:1. Replaced |
| A · texture | solid · diagonal stripes · outline | Each game its own fill, but the stripes made Longest word's numbers ("15", "18") hard to read. Not chosen |
| B · one outline | solid · --fg-soft · outline | Chosen. Ru: "B is good" |
Decision
Trivia's part of each bar, and its key next to "Trivia" in the cells and in How points work, is an outline of --fg (box-shadow: inset 0 0 0 1.5px var(--fg), no fill). Daily stays solid --fg, Longest --fg-soft. Trivia's numbers stay --fg, now on the ground.
Evidence
| The inks as categories (dark) | lightness band and chroma floor fail; --fg-faint against --fg-soft ΔE 17.8 |
| Trivia's numbers | 4.0:1 in dark mode and 5.6:1 in light before; 12.7:1 in both after |
| 320×568 | no sideways overflow; a part too thin for its number still leaves it off |
Consequences
- The three games differ by fill as well as shade, so the split reads without telling two greys apart.
- The scoring page's known gap on Trivia's 4.0:1 numbers is closed.
- The month strip already uses an outline for today; the two sit in different rows and don't meet.
